The Lost Art of Handwriting

Under the "submit" tab on the navigation bar, you'll find the guidelines to submit your own love letter to the site. You'll notice the first step is to write the letter by hand. Some people may prefer typing, however, theres a number of reasons why I want to encourage you to write a love letter by hand. In todays modern world it seems that almost all written communication is done through texts, emails, direct messages or Facebook posts. Rarely do we receive handwritten mail except for the occasional birthday or holiday card. I find that whenever I do receive a handwritten letter, there is something very special about it. I can hold it in my hands and the words seem to mean so much more. Below are three reasons that I hope will convince you to sit down with a paper and pen next time you want to send a message.

3 reasons why you should still send handwritten mail:

1. Handwriting is more personal

Everyone's handwriting is unique and we forget how special and identifiable it truly is when we are constantly staring at Aerial, Times New Roman and other modern typefaces. Handwriting is a way to visually show that the words you have written are truly your own.

The message itself is also more personal. A handwritten letter takes longer to write which shows the recipient that you put time and consideration into the words. You must be deliberate and thoughtful with each pen stroke when there is no backspace button.

2. They're memorable

A thoughtful letter can be treasured for years. Emails and text messages get lost in overflowing inboxes and can never be re-read. Handwritten letters have proven to stand the test of time. Countless fragile pieces of paper have been protected throughout history because powerful words are worth reading again and again.

I find the tangible nature of a letter to be especially important when you are communicating with someone you miss or haven't seen for awhile. The feeling of having the paper in your hands after knowing it was touched by that special person cannot be replicated over text.

3. They make people happy

Both the writer and the recipient can benefit from the joy of handwritten mail. Receiving a letter in the mail feels like a gift. It makes people feel special and important. I can't help but smile whenever I notice a hand addressed envelope in my mailbox. Whether it be from an old friend, my grandma, or my significant other, I am always excited to open it.

Writing the letter is also fun & enjoyable. It reminds us to slow down and take the time to devote all our attention to one simple task. It's a way to unplug and appreciate all of the special people in your life. You can make it as simple or creative as you wish by including doodles, stickers or photos inside.

Take the time to sit down with a pen and paper and make someones day by sending them a letter!
